Galois theory for commutative S-algebras

Abstract

The main ideas of this generalization of Galois theory for commutative rings are due to John Rognes an apply in categories of spectra with strictly monoidal smash product and their Bousfield localizations.

I will review Galois theory for theory commutative rings and finite Galois groups then describe the generalization to commutative S-algebras. In particular, I will discuss joint work with Birgit Richter on the passge between algebraic and topological galois extensions and the use of obstruction theory for E-infinity ring structures.
