Admission

Prerequisite. To apply for the M2 program, students must have passed the first year of a Master in Mathematics (or an equivalent foreign diploma).

Application procedure. Application is open from April 15th to June 30th, on the dedicated website of Institut Galilée. Responses (admittance, refusal, waiting list or request for further information) will be notified at the latest in the beginning of July.

Recommendation to apply to the three Masters 2. As indicated on the common website of the three Masters 2, the students are strongly recommended to also apply to the second year of the Masters of Fundamental Mathematics of the Université de Paris and of Sorbonne Université to increase their admission chances.

Organisation

The courses of the theoretical part are divided into 4 periods of 6 weeks each: des basic courses (september-october), fundamental courses I (november-december), fundamental courses II (january-february) and specialized courses (mach-april). Each course consists in 24 hours of teaching. Fundamental courses and some of the basic courses are completed by 12 hours of tutorial classes. Students must also pass an opening teaching unit.

During the second semestre, students must do an internship initiating to research under the supervision of a researcher, generally in the LAGA or the IMJ-PRG. This internship can also be supervised by a membre of another university in France, if this is approved by the head of the master.

Validation

Students must obtain 60 ECTS with the following rules:

  • Each course is worth 9 ECTS. Students must obtain 4x9=36 courses ECTS, including at most 18 ECTS of basic courses and at least 9 ECTS in fundamental courses II or specialized courses.
  • The internship, including a written report and a defense, is a compulsory 21 ECTS teach unit.
  • The opening teaching unit, worth 3 ECTS, is also compulsory.
  • Prospects

    • The natural continuation after this master II program is a PhD in Mathematics, at the LAGA, the IMJ-PRG or in another French or foreign mathematics research laboratory.
    • The graduate, which has been trained to excellence in mathematics, can also consider highly qualified jobs in research and developpment in the industry, or in the computer sciences or finance sectors .
    • A possible continuation for students who do not wish to go into research in mathematics is to prepare the agrégation competitive examination (restricted to European Union citizens) to become a mathematical teacher.
